Dr. Emilio Moran appointed to the National Science Board

On October 6, 2016, President Barack Obama appointed Dr. Emilio Moran to the National Science Board, where he, along with 23 other scientists and industry leaders, will provide guidance to the President and Congress on decisions of national policy and on the National Science Foundation’s investments in science and technology.

Dr. Moran is John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor at the Center for Global Change and Earth Observations, the new Center for Global Change Science, and at the Geography, Spatial Sciences and Environment Department at Michigan State University. He was elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 2010. We’re proud to have him at Michigan State University.

Explore his work and you’ll see a social scientist who has throughout his career delved into the intertwined world of human behavior, climate change, agriculture, economics and the use of satellite observations to complement the view from the ground. Dr. Moran’s hallmark has been an uncanny ability to ask the questions that matter to people, and integrate human and environmental sciences—a method he uses to get a holistic understanding of the key issues raised by climate change and land use change.

About the National Science Board

This prestigious honor is awarded to scientists, engineers and educators who have shown profound investment and influence within their field. The National Science Foundation (NSF) was founded by the National Science Foundation Act of 1950, which states, "The Foundation shall consist of a National Science Board ... and a Director." The Board and Director jointly "recommend and encourage the pursuit of national policies for the promotion of research and education in science and engineering.” The Board members, which serve six-year terms, also directly influence the future research direction of the NSF and act as an independent body of advisors to both the President and Congress on matters of policy.
