Using the NASA Polar Orbiting Fire Product Record to Enhance and Expand the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS)

Dr. David Roy, PhD, Professor at the MSU Center for Global Change and Earth Observations (CGCEO) and Department of Geography, will assist the development of the processing algorithms, software, and the global map visualizations, that will be ported from the University of Idaho to the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) hosted by the European Commission Joint Research Center.   In particular, Dr. Roy will:
  • help ensure that the GWIS refinements reflect science and applications user requirements through his co-chair role of the GOFC-GOLD Fire implementation team, and that the refined GWIS will enable policy maker and natural resource management users to generate scientifically accepted, reproducible fire information, at different spatial and temporal scales and extents, in easily accessible formats.
  • help remotely test the software installed in the GWIS.
  • attend at least one technical meeting with the European Commission Joint Research Center GWIS staff.
  • assist writing of the policy maker and natural resource management user documentation.
